Since 1997, the Swedish Registry has been the II-Stiftelsen (IIS), the Internet Infrastructure Foundation. This organization has two main tasks – to run and develop the top level domain .se – Sweden, and to further develop the Internet infrastructure in Sweden. The NIC-SE´s is the operating company of the foundation. There have been two important events in the liberalization of the .se ccTLD: Before 1997, the domain was reserved only to academic institutions, and was opened to other organizations in this year. Later, in 2003 the IIS further opened the rules to total liberalization of the .se domain. Today, there are more than 275 000 registered domain names under the Top Level Domain .se, and the growth rate is of 65413.33 new domain names per month (based on the 2004 monthly average newly registered names). The ccTLD .se was established by the Internic on September the 4th 1986 and was originally managed by Bjorn Eriksen, an individual who worked at a company named Enea Data. In 1988, he joined the Royal Institute of Technology of Stockholm and continued to manage the ccTLD.
