Summary
The Irish .ie ccTLD registry agency is since the year 2000 the IEDR, a not-for-profit Internet Domain Name Registry that acts as trustee for .ie Domain Names on behalf of the Internet community. It continues the operation of the Telecommunication Administration Centre, which was established in 1988. The .ie ccTLD is highly restricted. Applicants must have “fundamental solidarity” to Ireland. The following verifications are conducted at the time of registration: for companies: registration or trademark in Ireland; For private persons: Irish pass or certificate of birth. Today, there are about 44,000 registered domain names under the Top Level Domain .ie, and the growth rate is of 954,66 new domain names per month (based on the 2004 monthly average newly registered names). The ccTLD .ie was established by the Internic on January the 27th 1988 and was first managed by the University College Dublin Computing Services.
